Your web address
Putting your site on your own domain, step by step.
Connecting your address
- How do I put my site on my own web address?Open Launch and click Connect followed by your address. A window opens: sign in to the company where you bought it, approve, and we add the settings for you. It works with any domain company, takes a couple of minutes, and your email keeps working.
- How do I get a new web address?Open Launch and click Get my address. In the window that opens, search for one, pick it and pay. It's registered in your name and connected to your site for you.
- What are the lines I'm asked to add, and what do they do?Four short lines, called DNS records, tell the internet that your address now goes to your new site. Each has a Type, a Name and a Value. You copy them from your Daylight screen into your domain company's DNS page, exactly as shown.
- Where do I find the DNS settings for my domain? At the company you pay each year for your address, usually under a page called DNS, DNS records or Manage DNS next to your domain. Your setup screen tells you which company it is. Here's the route for the most common ones.
- Someone else set up my domain. How do I get it connected? On Your domain, click Someone else looks after it? (or No, or I'm not sure), then Send the steps to whoever set it up. We email them the exact lines to add and a page where they can see when it's working. You don't need their password or yours.
Before you switch
- Will connecting my domain affect my email? No. Your email is run by separate DNS lines (MX records) that we never ask you to touch, so it keeps working exactly as before. The setup screen names your email provider, and warns you before you change anything in the rare case your email shares a server with your old website.
- What happens to my old website and its Google rankings?Once your address points to your new site, visitors and Google see the new one. We send each of your old page addresses to the matching new page, so links and search rankings carry over. Keep paying for your address itself; you can cancel the old website plan once the new site is live.
