Why do reviews matter, and how do I get them?

Updated October 22, 2026

The short answer

Reviews are one of the biggest things Google weighs when it decides which practices to show, and clients read them before reaching out. Make it easy to leave one with your review link, never press clients or offer anything, and never confirm someone is a client.

Why they matter

Google weighs reviews heavily when it decides which practices to show for a search, and people choosing a therapist read them before they get in touch. A listing with no reviews loses to one with even a few.

How to get them, the right way

Therapy ethics codes (for psychologists, counselors and social workers alike) say not to solicit testimonials from clients. So the way to get reviews is an open, optional invitation that leaves the choice to them. Reviews in your dashboard has everything ready to copy:

  • Your review link: one click takes someone straight to the review form for your listing. Every page of the site we build for you links to it from the footer, as "Leave a review on Google" (not in Australia, where testimonials in health advertising aren't allowed).
  • A line for your email signature with that link.
  • A line for your welcome or intake materials: an invitation that says it's optional and never affects their care.

What not to do

  • Don't ask anyone in particular, during or after a session.
  • No incentives. Never offer a discount or gift for a review.
  • Protect privacy. When you reply, don't name the person or confirm they're your client.
  • Stay calm with a poor review. A short, kind, general reply reads well to future clients.

What you'll see

  • Your rating and number of reviews, next to practices nearby.
  • Recent reviews, and the ones that need a reply, with a Reply on Google link.

In Australia

Health practitioners can't use client testimonials in advertising, so your website never shows reviews.
