# What are the lines I'm asked to add, and what do they do?

Four short lines, called DNS records, tell the internet that your address now goes to your new site. Each has a Type, a Name and a Value. You copy them from your Daylight screen into your domain company's DNS page, exactly as shown.

## DNS in one sentence

DNS is the list that tells the internet where your website lives. You change four lines in that list, at the company where you bought your address, and your address starts showing your new site.

## The four lines

The exact Values are on your setup screen, each with a **Copy** button. They're specific to your site, so always copy them from there.

**No AAAA in your company's list?** Some, Wix among them, don't offer it. Skip it and add a TXT line named **_fly-ownership** instead, with the value shown on your setup screen. It lets us secure yourpractice.com without the AAAA line. If you used **Add the settings for me**, it's added for you.

| Type | Name | What it does |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **A** | **@** | Sends your address (yourpractice.com) to your new site. |
| **AAAA** | **@** | The same, for visitors on newer networks and many phones. |
| **CNAME** | **www** | Makes www.yourpractice.com work too. |
| **TXT** | **_daylight** | Shows us the address is yours. It does nothing else. |

## Filling in the boxes

- **Type**: choose it from the list (A, AAAA, CNAME or TXT).
- **Name** (some companies call it **Host**): type exactly what we show. “@” means the address itself; a few companies want that box left blank instead.
- **Value** (sometimes **Points to**, **Data** or **Target**): paste what you copied.
- **TTL**: leave it as it is.

Good to know: In the Name box, type just www or _daylight. Most companies add your address on the end by themselves, so typing www.yourpractice.com would make it www.yourpractice.com.yourpractice.com.

## Edit, don't double up

If there's already a line with the same Type and Name (very often an A record for @ pointing at your old site, or a “parked” page), change its Value instead of adding a second line. Two A records for @ send about half your visitors to the old site.

## Can't find an A record for @?

Some companies point your address at a website they host with a different kind of line: an **ALIAS** record (sometimes called **ANAME** or a flattened **CNAME**) for @. Hostinger does this, pointing at connect.hostinger.com. It works like an A record, so the steps that mention an A record for @ mean this line.

**Delete the ALIAS line for @**, then add our A record for @. Deleting it also removes the AAAA addresses it was giving out, so there may be no AAAA line to delete at all.

## Save each line

After filling in a line, press **Add record** or **Save**. A line typed into the boxes but never added isn't there yet, and the check can't see it.

## Leave these alone

- **MX** records: these run your email. We never ask you to change them.
- Any other TXT records (for email, Google or Microsoft): leave them where they are.
